全国の魔法科高校に、九校戦の種目を一部変更するという通知が送られてきた。変更があったのは六種目中の三種目で、実に半分もの競技が変更になるという。急な種目変更に対応するため、第一高校の生徒会はルールの把握や選手の再選考、CADの再調整などに追われることになる。九校戦開始一ヶ月前という急なタイミングの変更に、誰もが大会運営に対する不満をこぼす中、達也は新しく追加された競技がどれも軍事色が強いことに疑念を抱いていた。
