How does the future for followmy.tv look like?

By Lemon - Sep 07, 2015

FMTV at the moment

Followmy.tv has been around since January 2010, created out of love for Television and desperately in need of a decent agenda to keep track of our favourite episodes. Our main goal was to create a platform to get people to follow, share and talk about their favorite TV Shows. Fast forward 5 years later: we've created a community of 52 342 members, over 6000 of them using followmy.tv on a daily base. We could not have dreamed a greater gift. Thank you!

People who've been around since our start already know we hardly make any statements about followmy.tv. In fact: we only make statements if we feel we need to. This is because our platform is very powerful: It can survive without any moderation. That's all because a lot of people have the same feeling as we do; A lot of people love their TV shows and have a need for a platform to keep track of them, talk about them and to introduce them to friends. This is also the reason why we’re creating this blog; because we still believe in this. Even more: We’re taking the Followmy.tv experience to the next level.

New Updates

The site was originally built on top of the CakePHP 1.3 framework. We started moving to the 2.x version of that framework a couple of years ago. Recently 3.0 came out and we ended up deciding to rebuild the entire site from the ground up. With that in mind, we do have several new features planned and here are a couple of them:

  • OAuth2 API: A fully open API that developers can use to create cool things
  • Native mobile apps: Planning on ios and android
  • Lists: A cool new way to discover tv shows in a unique way
  • Groups: Form groups to discuss and share your favorite tv shows with your closest friends.
  • Discussions: A better way to communicate with fans.

The entire new website will use its own OAuth2 API to communicate with the back-end. Which means that you as a developer will have full creative freedom and making cool things to integrate with followmy.tv!

Our goal is to get all of this done by the end of the year.

Kenny

Since the early beginning we have received tons of mails, tweets, Facebook messages,.. so we decided to introduce Kenny Leys (SilentAlarm) on board of our team to manage our social media platforms. He'll be responsible for keeping our instagram, facebook and twitter up-to-date with the latest news, throwbacks, behind the scene footage and much more. Make sure to follow every single one of them!

Jasper

Jasper and I founded followmy.tv almost 5 years ago. We had this grand idea and we made it reality. Everything you see on your screen was designed by Jasper and he did an amazing job. Due to other work & life responsibilities, Jasper is stepping down from the team. Thanks you for all your hard work Jasper, you will be missed!

UI Designer

At the moment we’re back a 2-man operation but we’re hoping to expand soon! If you are a software developer with plenty experience in CakePHP (or PHP in general) or if you are an awesome UI designer, please drop us an email on info@followmy.tv.

Thanks

We've said it before; Followmy.tv will keep going on as long as we’re existing. All of this thanks to every awesome user out there. We’d like to end this post with a special thanks to all of the users that have donated, without you guys/girls Followmy.tv would not be have been possible to maintain.

Keep track of our social media, we’ll be back soon.

@Frantic Oh god yes!

@Baltimore it seems your prayers have been answered.

@Baltimore Your other options would be to run the migration tool from time to time as more shows are added on a daily basis. Or wait until we've gone through all of the tvrage data dumps (which will also take some time).

cheers,

Jan

@janp I am not really in the mood to add 700 shows by hand.

@Baltimore thanks for checking us out while fmtv isn't at full capacity.

You can request show additions on your missing shows. We're also aware of the tagging system not being optimal. Improvements are in the pipeline. http://www.tvmaze.com/threads/154/better-show-tag-management

@janp I migrated to you guys, but it hasn't got 700 shows I've got on my list, so I only have like the basic stuff there. Plus it hasn't a good overview and with these much shows, the tagging process is awfully slow. If you'd be able to change these things, I'd consider REALLY moving completely. But like this, it just isn't that a good option. (If I wasn't a total couch-potato, I'd consider it. So like, if some of the users are just watching like 30 shows that are all very popular, they'd have a ball with your site. I am not one of those people.)

As you can see, I am pissed and annoyed and outraged. Fuck this.

Any news about the tvrage issue?
I really don't want to move to another site (I also use myepisodes.com and they seem to have solved the problem with tvrage, but i only use that site to check my downloads).
Give us some hope!

@Lokatius You're welcome to check us out. we've built a migration tool for users who are looking for a solution while fmtv is having issues.

I am angry. I want to stay loyal to this site, but it isn't working anymore. Why are you guys not doing anything about the tvrage-situation? I can't check my episodes, nothing is working, it's awful. I am afraid I'll also have to move on. I hate this.

best alternative is tvmaze.com, even has a followmy.tv importer!

@Frantic https://github.com/nZEDb/nZEDb/issues/1879

fwiw they are suggesting a few other sites here to scrape tv shows from.

When can we expect an update to get the show tracking back on track?

andrejuseu
andrejuseu (Oct 24, 2015)

@Lokatius trakt.tv but design is just to damn hard to use + it's for automatic tv checking. As far as I used tv tracking sites FMT is the best with easy as fuck use system, watch a episode, came here and checked it, thats all :)

Hard for me to ask this, because I really am a fan of this site, but anyone got a alternative?

This is getting annoying, can we at least know the progress on the matter ?

If there is no solution in the next days, i have to move on ... I don't want to, because in my honest opinion followmy.tv is the best tv tracker out there, but with the lack of updates due to the outtage it's unusable since mid of september, which is no a month ... :(

So TVrage totally stopped working. 0 episodes in watchlist

Right now I have 101 episodes that I haven't checked in yet on this site. My textfile are getting way to large now ^^ Hope there will be an update soon, in a day or two :)

@SilentAlarm i know, but the site itself is one hour behind. Changing my time-zone only changes what time is displayed but not when it says when an episode is airing.

For example, when an episode airs at 9 PM PDT (New York time) and i set my timezone to CEST (Amsterdam time) that will add 6 hours to the displayed time but when it's 9 PM PDT the site still thinks it's 8 PM PDT
