Dr. Cal Lightman (Tim Roth) is a psychology genius, deception expert and head of The Lightman Group, an organization contorted by law enforcement authorities, corporations and private individuals in their quest for truth. Dr. Lightman uses applied psychology to uncover the truth using techniques such as micro-expressions analysis facial action coding in order to read individual's reactions and intentions. His character is based on eminent psychologist Dr. Paul Ekman a pioneer in the study of emotions and of facial expressions.

Dr. Lightman is assisted by Dr. Gillian Foster (Keli Willimams), gifted psychologist and Cal's professional partner in The Lightman Group, by Eli Loker (Brendan Hines) an academically trained deception researcher initially adhering to the practice of "Radical Honesty" and by Ria Torres (Monica Raymund), the newest addition to the team, a "natural" at reading people, acting more on instinct than anything else, she is able to catch certain clues that others among the Lightman's Group may miss.
