Doctor Who

Doctor Who

The Doctor looks and seems human. He's handsome, witty, and could be mistaken for just another man in the street. But the Doctor is a Time Lord: a 900 year old alien with 2 hearts, part of a gifted civilization who mastered time travel. The Doctor saves planets for a living - more of a hobby actually, and he's very, very good at it. He's saved us from alien menaces and evil from before time began - but just who is he?

@Artifex If the episode was aired on christmas, it's an important one.

All these specials all the time really confuse me. Which ones are important and which aren't? The ones from the last couple of months: I've only watched The Last Day and the Day of The Doctor. Pretty sure that's the only important ones.

Anyone else thinks that Moffat is using his abilities to write Sherlock, leaving almost nothing to Doctor Who?

New prequel episode out, and I'm totally lost. What was that all about...?

@emieldonckels what cursed said. The 11th doctor is a very different beast.

@emieldonckels Its not for everybody. Even the biggest doctor Who fan has to admit there are some real stinkers in between the gems. If u are really stuck you can try to start watching the fifth season because its sort of a reboot with a different style of episodes (more continuity and character building). I just recommend you watch S3E10 and S4E8-9 these are not only brilliant episodes they are also needed for the fifth season. Goodluck!

@emonquente I want to ask you a question because you seem to be an avid Whovian. Am I wrong when I say that the first three seasons of this show are horribly written with repetitive plots per episode? I tried my best to get into this show but I am so sick and tired of seeing the same damn plot every episode. I really liked the first episode of s03 because the new companion finally showed some character. This was quickly lost in the next few episodes. Does this show ever get on the level of plot and character development as, let's say, a Breaking Bad, or maybe something like Fringe? I am just so tired of seeing people sacrifice themselves for no apparent reason. "Don't shoot them, it doesn't work!" BANGBANGBANG *character gets killed* "sigh". Is this show just not for me? Or do I need to stick with it?

@emonquente To be honest, when I watched it I wasn't sober either. So I'll re-watch it sober as well. But I think you're probably right about what made it great and all that. I'll get back on this when I've watched it a second time.

Whovians == BBC is doing 50th anniversary retrospectives with an old serial for the doctor. This week was the 5th, so there are two left to catch.

I just got BBC America a few days ago or I would have said sooner.

@emonquente I re-watched it sober and, I think you are right, it was the coming together of several seasons and the pretty pink bow -- but, all the same, I do believe the episode itself was pretty good -- and after so damned many years if not knowing the Doctor's name before this second veritable "screw you" to finding out --- I must say that it is a very, very good episode on its own. I know you can't actually, but try to view it with fresh eyes, or at least view it with drunk eyes (saying this after I have watched it sobre) this was an absolutely fantastic episode in any right -- I do realize it lacked any sort of development or story for the newcomer -- but for old hats of any kind, even (perhaps especially) New Whovians -- this was a great episode. Though, I must admit, the last few minutes, the actor introduction, they were the best part. That part alone makes it my favourite New Who episode ever, and top 5 episode ever period -- quite simply because we get to see something that I have always wondered ---the new actor should show us with the introduction he got. I look forward to the next seaon, which will be what really shows what it does in the test of time.

As I said initially, it is hardly even worth watching twice as it is ---- but for those who know the story, especially the old Doctor --- it stands a cut above the rest anyhow for sheer plot advancement. That plot advancement itself was so worthwhile that it excuses any shortcomings in the episode as a stand-alone (which Doctor Who, as a serial back in the day, was never meant to be able to do)

I loved the latest episode, but surely it wasn't the greatest ever? It was all leading towards this episode for three seasons, it's not the episode that's amazing, it's the coming together of all the things Moffat created in the storyline that leaded up to this point.

Again, really loved latest episode, but not the best I've ever seen.

Holy. . .just. . .I mean. . . .explicatives galore.

Best doctor Who episode freaking EVAR. Oddly enough, one likely not worth watching twice, but still, best episode EVER!!!! And I've seen (or heard in some cases) every single freaking one of the thousand or so that are out there, and let's be clear. We are LITERALLY at a thousand or so folks, the original series has 840 if I recall properly. And I've seen every single one and this was the best ever, bar none.l Not even the death of the third doctor, which was my prior favourite.

They took the 13th, they took the 8th, they took a FANTASTIc actor to introduce, and they made it beyond awesome. Moffat, you are fantastic. I thought the Face of Bo was kinda clever but this, this. .. just . . . dear great good gods mate. Bloody brilliant.

And now we wait for November. . . .Just. . .Freaking November? REALLY? GRRR!!!! I want it now! I want to continue right this very minute!!!!

*coughs* pardon, but, just watch -- if you've been with it nearly as long as I have, just. . .wow. . . .

@Artifex Yeah -- I never liked the Cybermen -- even from the first time they ever appeared (though they were just...goofy back then). Just hoping this one is good.

For what it is worth, I think I hate the Daleks and the Cybermen for the exact same reason. The argument that pure logic turns people into monsters was interesting the first few times it was investigated -- particularly when the origin of the Daleks episode used it to make a very cogent argument about the faults of the Nazi regime but, that was something like 30 years ago, the entire thing is just trite by this point.

Oh and don't get me started on the ghost shift thing -- when the Torchwood lady cried and the creators said it was her freaking love of queen and country -- rather than the cold and monstrous devotion she actual had. Which, for that matter, would have at least made the argument that it takes a monster to best a monster and . .yeah -- when I heard what the creators meant for that scene to be about I jsut *grumbles*.

What was I on about? Oh yeah, maybe this one will be good. Ha ha
