Doctor Who

Doctor Who

The Doctor looks and seems human. He's handsome, witty, and could be mistaken for just another man in the street. But the Doctor is a Time Lord: a 900 year old alien with 2 hearts, part of a gifted civilization who mastered time travel. The Doctor saves planets for a living - more of a hobby actually, and he's very, very good at it. He's saved us from alien menaces and evil from before time began - but just who is he?

@kenneththepage See, that's where I get confused tho. What, as far as you saw, were some of the points that were just bad storytelling?

I see a convoluted mess, with some blatant cheats thrown in. I see a show about time-travel that, in playing with that idea too much, has (inevitably) left itself open to, at the least, the existence of alternative narratives that make as much, or more, sense as the one chosen -- and I see some pretty gnarly pacing issues. That said, I'm missing where the storytelling is bad.

Truly, and please forgive me if I seem to be baiting, I am curious what exactly it is that is, in conservative terms, turning people off the show recently. Particularly as I get further from the awe of first watching the 2005 show and come to love the 9th Doctor even more, find I cannot bear the repeats of the 10th Doctor save a simple few (most involving Donna, who I originally did not like) even tho I still love Tennant's portrayal, and become more and more impressed with both Smith AND his episodes.

Then again. . . I LOVED the 10th Doctor the first time through (except the two-parter with The Master, it was rubbish, and that's not the Master, and I hate it) and took some serious warming-up-to in order to appreciate Smith. The only opinion I've had about the show that remained through several repeats was of the 1st series. I still love Eccleson as the Doctor, think Rose was solid (and my favourite, tho not, admittedly, the best) companion, find the writing solid and at times even impressive - and even find the . . . visuals of the thing as a whole really (often cheap, silly, hard to buy at all) . . . rather quaint, in a good way.

But I ramble - as I said initially, I am actually interesting in your view on things, always fun to see things from different angles.

@emonquente i dont mind change, i mind a disintegration of writing quality. doctor who is just plain bad storytelling lately, at least for me.

@emonquente i don't see a problem in changing, but in how it changes.

The Christmas special had some. . .problems -- that said, I'm starting to just shrug off any concerns of continuity, a cohesive universe, and blah blah blah.

As it has been since LAST christmas' special, Doctor Who is an entirely different show than it has ever been, it really feels like they really just want to pump up the stakes, over and over again, and give those huge pay-off moments of tying together intricate time-travel-naseua-inducing-loop-the-loops.

What am I trying to say exactly. . . .

The old days of "Here's a space and time, let's have some fun!" are dead. Doctor Who is long since been "Tales from our universe" and is now "The Legend of the Doctor."

And that's all right -- I like the new about as well as the old in the end, pros and cons to either and really. . .I dunno. Doctor Who is something that really might be around forever tho, so I guess change is a good thing, the Doctor himself usually thinks so at any rate.

I liked this episode quite a lot, for all its faults and . . . bravado?

@NadTV yea, he seems to think he can do whatever he wants with the show, regularly ignoring the very few rules doctor who even has. ill never stop watching but im always waiting for the day moffat leaves...

@kenneththepage agree with ya! and, once again, I'm really tired of Moffat's god complex.

Where's this Christmas Special that aired yesterday? :)

Oh, and also, the Network says 'BBC One', but they moved it to BBC Two a while ago. Maybe it should just say 'BBC'? ;p

this show really doesn't deserve that 4.5 anymore... a 4 would be more fitting considering the past few seasons. generous, even

@Artifex If the episode was aired on christmas, it's an important one.

All these specials all the time really confuse me. Which ones are important and which aren't? The ones from the last couple of months: I've only watched The Last Day and the Day of The Doctor. Pretty sure that's the only important ones.

Anyone else thinks that Moffat is using his abilities to write Sherlock, leaving almost nothing to Doctor Who?
