Our first batch of incremental updates

By josbeir - Apr 01, 2012

We have deployed a couple of updates mainly for usability.

  • The dashboard now shows a number next to the episode's number indicating how many episodes you haven't watched for that show.
  • On a show's episode tab you can now see if and when you have watched that show's episodes.
  • An extra set of buttons have been added on shows' bulk edit screens.

We would like to give a big shoutout to kra, for giving us the idea of adding the number of unwatched episodes to the dashboard.

[UPDATE] We just added an option to disable the counter, you can find it in Site settings => Show the number of unwatched episodes

The updates gave a new dynamism to interaction with friends.

Yet another question. If I removed a friend, would my updates still appear on that person's friend feed or it has to be a mutual follow?

Hi! thanks for making this site much better each time :) I have a question. Maybe it is because of how I use that feature but I think that the pinned shows shouldn't also appear in the unwatched show list. Doesn't make sense. It is just me?

@AndoNET That was actually a bug you found, its fixed now. thanks!

I have a question, what's "unpin" button in Home|Show list page for? I mean, I'll understand if this button would be only available for pinned shows, but it seems to appear on all shows, including not pinned.

The option to disable the counter is now in settings.

@josbeir If you make that disable option could you give us also the choice to show it only on pinned shows and not on unwatched shows? Cause now I mostly see "1x01| -" and I just find it kind of annoying. But for pinnned shows is this just great.

I like the numer of unseen episodes a lot.
But you should remove the option of rating a episode without checkin it in. At first it doesnt make sense, and I alway click on the stars first and then I realize that I havent checked in that episode.
And I would really like to be able to sort my pinned shows on the dashboard by latest aired first so I dont have to scroll down to see what has been aired recently.

@kra we'll just make an option to disable it for the haters out there :-) Please hold on, it wont be in here today :-)

@josbeir Maybe you can change the episode number to bold and the unwatched number to normal, that way it isn't so "eye catching"

@Jakurdo hmm you're right for this one... i'll put it on the table with the team

@josbeir Thanks, looks a lot better now. And I'm not contesting that the function should've been added, it's just that I personally would like the option to get rid of it on my dashboard. Actually, I do like it in my show list (which I visit when I checkin episodes of a show I'm catching up on). But to me the dashboard is the place for what's being currently aired, what's happening now. There I'm just not terribly interested in seeing what happened in the past.

And again, I understand that other people might feel different about this. But why not just add the option to get rid of them on the dashboard. Again, you did this for the automatic prompting for comments with checkin, so why not with this function as well?

EDIT:: Just read your edit; I understand your argument, and thanks again for fixing the issues. At least it looks a lot better now.

@Jakurdo Yea you where right.. windows font rendering issue.. i should have known :-)

It is fixed now.

The number is actually quite informative and is something that's indeed been asked by the community a lot.

Thanks for reporting this issue!

Also please understand that we just can't add on/off options for every every feature we deploy on the website. Having many options is cool for some people but overall its not that good for usability, that's why we try to keep this to the minimum.

@josbeir No problem, I'm using Firefox (latest version, I guess) under windows 7. Screen resolution is 1366x768 (laptop).

Here is a printscreen cutout of the misaligned seperator.. thingy ;) http://www.freeimagehosting.net/ia24m

As you can see, the numbers are quite small, I guess the fact that they are bold makes them a bit more crappy looking. To be sure, it's Family Guy that is in it's 10th season. It also shows that it the function is almost completely redundant for GoT, where a "-" sign just takes up space, indicating I've seen every episode so far (I already knew that ;) )

But to be honest, these are minor gripes. My main issue is that I just don't really want to see this on my dashboard. Apparently you guys like it, and it was a community suggestion so I guess more people do want it. I personally just think it clutters up my dashboard without adding anything useful to me. Just add the option to get rid of them, pretty please :)

@Jakurdo can you provide us with a screenshot or some information about your browser and OS ? Thanks

Hmm, not sure if I'm happy with the addition of showing the number of unwatched episodes right there on the dashboard. The numbers are too small, why are they not the same size as the episode numbers? Also, the alignment of the seperation between the episode number and number of unwatched episodes is off when a show is in it's 10th or higher season (like, say, Family Guy on my Dashboard).

Hopefully the option to get rid of this extra bit of info on the dashboard will be added soon. I personally don't really see the added value of it, if I want I could just visit the shows page and see how many unwatched episodes I have. Granted, that takes an additional step, but I'm really not that interested in how many episodes I still have to see. And like I said, if I am, it's just one click away.

I am a big fan of these incremental updates though, keep them coming. I'd say, just make sure when you add some new function, also add the option to opt out of it. Like the option to not be asked to leave a comment when you checkin an episode, that was added as well.
