Pilot

It’s just after the battle of New York, and now that the existence of super heroes and aliens has become public knowledge, the world is trying to come to grips with this new reality. Agent Phil Coulson is back in action and has his eye on a mysterious group called the Rising Tide. In order to track this unseen, unknown enemy, he has assembled a small, highly select group of Agents from the worldwide law-enforcement organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D. (Strategic Homeland Intervention Enforcement and Logistics Division). The group’s first assignment together as a team finds them trying to track down an ordinary man who has gained extraordinary powers. Powers that could have devastating consequences.

As it's been said before: with its potential, it is a crime the pilot came down to this. I would hope for the series to increase the quality but the plot seems it's going to stick around for the whole season and it's so poor it takes away my faith.

The very best: Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill).

Found it quite entertaining. Really like the cast of British 'nerds', Skye and the veteran become pilot/driver. Only thing that was missing, was the feeling of really wanting to see the next episode. Just the excitement for the next episode was missing in my opinion, the what happens next feeling.

Immensely disappointing. I never got around to watching Dollhouse, so excluding that, this is just so many levels below the quality you'd expect from Whedon. The plot and characterisation is amazingly sloppy and all over the place, and the overall story was simply too bland and unengaging. The main storyline felt very forced, and barely grounded in the shallow character that was Mike ("These are people, Gary, not just parts you replace." Ugh). There were a couple of classic Whedon-lines in there (thank God), but they're few and far between. And the screen direction was simply very, very bad. Some really horrible stuff: awful hand-to-hand combat (shakycam, close-ups and hyperactive editing that would even put Michael Bay to shame), some really weird and out of place shots (sadly not 'interesting' weird, and aesthetically plain ugly), bullshit post-production lensflares, cringeworthy slowmo, ... the whole thing just feels uninspired and bland. I even noticed a bunch of shots where the highlights are simply blown out. Embarrassing production values. I know screendirection has never been Whedon's strongest point, but djeez, he usually manages to keep it solid.

Maybe the likes of Hannibal, Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones spoiled me, but this actually made me remember why I prefer film to television (a thought that hadn't crossed my mind in at least a year). On a technical level this just feels low budget and amateurish, and the writing simply isn't interesting or fun enough to support those major flaws.

Anyway, very disappointing. Really hope it's simply a bad pilot, but I've lost a lot of hope for this show really quickly.
