the airplane crashed because of desmond, jacob never said the was his fault
So did he knew that that specific airplane was going to crash or did he crash it himself with some magic?
Who said everyone on the plane was a candidate? There were also names in The Lighthouse who weren't on the plane...
Jacob just chose some people who had "miserable lives" and he made sure they all ended up together in one spot. But just like on Ajira not all of the people on the plane were essential to this plan. So for them it's just "tough luck"...
If there were dads with kids on the plane, they definitely had shitty lives :p
And what about all the other people on that plane that crashed, did they also had shitty lives? There could be moms and dads on that plane, even kids.

Decent episode, though it didn't really answer all that many questions. "What they died for" just being, "you have to protect the island" is something we've already known for a long time.
