Abby Elliott and Michaela Watkins' first episode as cast members.
With this episode Abby Elliott became the first second-generation cast member. Her father, Chris Elliott, was a cast member in the 1994-95 season. Abby is also the third generation of her family to appear on the show. Her grandfather Bob Elliott appeared on the season 4 episode of the show hosted by Elliott Gould with his comedy partner Ray Goulding (Bob & Ray).
Beyoncé Knowles performed "If I Were a Boy" and "Single Ladies", and appeared in a sketch about a music video of the latter.
Justin Timberlake made a cameo during Weekend Update and in the "Single Ladies" sketch as one of the three backup dancers.
The January 3rd rerun was delayed 53 minutes due to a NFL Wild Card game.
