The TVRage situation

By SilentAlarm - Sep 14, 2015

As you may know: We've been using the TVRage API to get all our data (the airdates, episodes,.. ). Their website has been offline for a week by now, so we're preparing for the worst. At this moment Jelle is developing an alternative. We just wanted to let you know that there is no loss of data (and there won't be). All the existing data are safe in our database.

Please let us know if you have any questions about this.

PS. We'll be replying on the mails we received about becoming a moderator / developer this week. Send us an email at info@followmy.tv if you haven't done so already!

-- Update Saturday 10 October --

I (Jelle) am swamped with work at the moment. Will be for another week probably. I secretly hoped tvrage would have come back online but it seems like it's dead for good.

This means that I have to completely rewrite the importer and figure out how to map existing data to new external data.

This takes a long time because that part of the application was designed for speed and is very complex. It would take me several days to change, optimize and test with live data.

Currently I just have no time at all to do this. I'm working 15h + daily at my regular job to finish a big project before its deadline.

I might be able to start work on this update tomorrow for a couple of hours. But it being finished, tested and deployed will take at least a week or two.

@jorio Hi Jorio,

Since there is no export functionality for users on FMTV, we need your username & password to automatically log in to your account and retrieve your data. If FMTV would provide a way to download your data, we would gladly use that instead!

Your password isn't stored anywhere and will be gone from memory as soon as the export is complete. Changing your password beforehand like Saxo suggested is a good option too.

cheers,

Jan

@jorio To get your show data, change your FMTV password, import, then change it back if you want (and I recommend that, as well as using a different password on all sites). I've done it and nothing has happened to my acc.

@janp The fact that you ask for my password makes me worry about fishing page. Please tell us why you need our passwords.

@silentalar m let us know if we can help you guys out or if you're using another data provider.

@Saxo I completely agree. I don't have my own API (my site and blogs aren't as large as FMTV, and they don't use any type of database API), but I always have a backup ready. I keep the template for my site and both of my blogs in their own separate ZIP files. I even keep the information logged in a OneNote notebook (a separate one for each blog and site as well) along with the photos, saved on the cloud.

Saxo
Saxo (Oct 23, 2015)

@Teena Indeed. I hope that even when the site is up and running, they continuously in their free time work on setting up a backup site using a different API ready to switch over in future as well. Obviously that won't be urgent, but there needs to be a backup ready to roll incase this happens again in future. Maybe they could even work with the community to set up FMTV's own database and make its own API.

@Saxo I understand the developers having to change their information API (I get it, I have my own site too, not on this scale, but I understand the frustration regardless), but people are getting impatient. I hope that it's good news this weekend (like you stated), because no matter how much people love the site they aren't going to wait around forever. Besides, at least the developers don't have to redo the site from scratch, then it would be a death sentence for FMTV. For the sake of the developers/administrators and the avid users, I hope everything is straightened out ASAP.

@kakature and in the first update they said "i'm busy right now but next week when i have more free time i'll fix it", 2 weeks later he said "joking, i was just hoping tvrage fixes itself".

I hope you are right and the site does come back this weekend, but if the past tells us anything it's that we shouldn't read into that too much :/

To be fair, in the last update (10th October) Jelle said 'it will take a week or two', which is probably why we can expect an update this weekend or Monday.

Switched to tvmaze, but man its interface is so clunky compared to FMTV. But ya, even if it takes a week a month or a year and FMTV comes back up, I'm still coming back, best layout of all the sites.

Saxo
Saxo (Oct 22, 2015)

@Amberfool thanks I will look into that, I've also heard good things about TvMaze too so I'll give both a try if it's not fixed this week. The good thing about FMTV that IMO is unrivalled by opposing sites is the layout and functionality but both of those are pointless if the entire point of the site doesn't work.

@Teena Seems like most people are giving it another few weeks max.. let's hope this weekends news is good news otherwise I fear for the future of FMTV. A lot of people ready to abandon it if it's not fixed within the next few weeks.

Teena
Teena (Oct 22, 2015)

I love the way this is site is, but if it doesn't get sorted out in the next couple weeks (at the max, a month) I'm going elsewhere. I guess I'd just have to make my profile private because there is no way to delete or deactivate your profile, no way I've seen anyway. BTW, it's not as interactive (you can't add friends, get notifications, etc), but to just keep track while they're fixing this, try: http://www.tvbuzer.com/ - That's what I use since some of the episodes on certain shows aren't listed.

@Saxo, I don't like trakt either, try followshows.com. It's been working fairly well for me in the interim

Saxo
Saxo (Oct 22, 2015)

@sammousa I don't like trakt.tv, poor layout and following a show & marking off specific episodes is a pain.

@TomF if that's what they say then I'm going to start transferring my stuff elsewhere and moving there until the third deadline is up, if it's still not back then i'll move permanantly. The past 2 updates all we've gotten is rehashed versions of "we'll work on it in X days", nothing until those days are up and then we get hit with another "We'll work on it in X days".

I get this stuff takes time and I'm probably coming off as a dick here but I need to track my shows and I'm losing track, it's testing my patience.

On their Twitter they're saying we'll get more news on Sunday/Monday, I'm guessing to say that it'll take another week or two. -.-
