The TVRage situation
As you may know: We've been using the TVRage API to get all our data (the airdates, episodes,.. ). Their website has been offline for a week by now, so we're preparing for the worst. At this moment Jelle is developing an alternative. We just wanted to let you know that there is no loss of data (and there won't be). All the existing data are safe in our database.
Please let us know if you have any questions about this.
PS. We'll be replying on the mails we received about becoming a moderator / developer this week. Send us an email at info@followmy.tv if you haven't done so already!
-- Update Saturday 10 October --
I (Jelle) am swamped with work at the moment. Will be for another week probably. I secretly hoped tvrage would have come back online but it seems like it's dead for good.
This means that I have to completely rewrite the importer and figure out how to map existing data to new external data.
This takes a long time because that part of the application was designed for speed and is very complex. It would take me several days to change, optimize and test with live data.
Currently I just have no time at all to do this. I'm working 15h + daily at my regular job to finish a big project before its deadline.
I might be able to start work on this update tomorrow for a couple of hours. But it being finished, tested and deployed will take at least a week or two.
Comments
@Foaman correct, myepisodes has switched over to TVmaze as a data provider. We hope fmtv does the same...
a new update would be nice...
i switched to another site for the moment, just to keep track of the shows that i watch. I hope this site is coming back because it's so simple and easy to keep up with everything
@PippoInzaghi I asked TvMaze on twitter and FMTV hasn't even gotten in contact with them apparently! It feels like they're just leaving the site to die
@bubonicfred Myepisodes is simple and practical tbh, it never really needed any form of massive overhaul, it just works. if something ain't broke, don't fix it. They also added the long awaited search box under the site's header and increased the display width of the pages, a few other changes here and there..
@Foaman I'm actually surprised myepisodes switched, I switched over here because myepisodes hadn't had any form of update for years. Luckily most of the shows I watch are a few years old so I havent really missed any episodes.
C'mon guys, tvmaze is there for the taking.
myepisodes (which I have been using for years before I came here) was also relying on tvrage but they have moved on to another DB (I think tvmaze) and almost all shows got updated. I found out I had missed a ton of episodes of different tv shows.. I really hope you guys follow suit otherwise this site will lose a large part of it's population soon, I loved this site because it was sort of like the social site for tv couch potatoes but without any new data to track shows, I have no reason to continue coming here anymore ..
What @saxo said.
This is being handled very poorly.
What will ultimately kill this site is lack of communication.
Where's the update? It's been 11 days since your last communication and here we are losing tracks of the shows.
On the point of jumping to another site this is just taking way to long. Over a month now :s
Still no update.... really considering switching to another site. There's no communication, you aren't updating us on the situation and it's been down for months now. When you do communicate with us it's vague or even nonsense like when you first said "I'm done with exams next week then I'll work on it", fastforward two weeks and you said "joking lol, i was just hoping tvrage fixed itself out, I'm still busy". You said in the post you might be able to work on it a bit for a few hours "tomorrow". Any update on this? did this happen or are we just being strung along?
We need an update and if you're too busy to run the site maybe you should take someone else on board because this has gone on far too long and it seems like it's going to be going on for much longer.
@GeekinTexas +1
Any updates? I know this can't be fixed in a day, but at least keep your users informed about the progress..
Unfortunately, you've hitched your wagon to TVRage, which is now dead. Death is not a temporary situation. TVmaze seems to be a good alternative to TVRage, and in fact, does a pretty good job doing what followmy.tv does as well.
Although I don't like putting all my eggs in one basket, it seems that followmy.tv had all its eggs in the same basket. To be successful, you'll need to be able to switch to another database quickly and easily, or combine the data from two or more places.
Thank you Jelle for doing this. How can I help you build out the website. It's been my go-to everyday for over three years now.
Hi Jelle,
In case you'd like to find out more about the tvrage situation. The ex-sysadmin posted a response about it here. http://www.tvmaze.com/blogs/6/an-update-on-the-tvrage-situation
Have you considered making the code open source? That way the community can help out!
Do you want to help? Donate some money to them! http://followmy.tv/donate #welovefollowmytv
Same thing here: I'm a daily user of followmytv and it's one of my most beloved websites. I don't mind waiting, just take your time :) we understand!
