The TVRage situation

By SilentAlarm - Sep 14, 2015

As you may know: We've been using the TVRage API to get all our data (the airdates, episodes,.. ). Their website has been offline for a week by now, so we're preparing for the worst. At this moment Jelle is developing an alternative. We just wanted to let you know that there is no loss of data (and there won't be). All the existing data are safe in our database.

Please let us know if you have any questions about this.

PS. We'll be replying on the mails we received about becoming a moderator / developer this week. Send us an email at info@followmy.tv if you haven't done so already!

-- Update Saturday 10 October --

I (Jelle) am swamped with work at the moment. Will be for another week probably. I secretly hoped tvrage would have come back online but it seems like it's dead for good.

This means that I have to completely rewrite the importer and figure out how to map existing data to new external data.

This takes a long time because that part of the application was designed for speed and is very complex. It would take me several days to change, optimize and test with live data.

Currently I just have no time at all to do this. I'm working 15h + daily at my regular job to finish a big project before its deadline.

I might be able to start work on this update tomorrow for a couple of hours. But it being finished, tested and deployed will take at least a week or two.

Have you thought of maybe using another db like thetvdb.com ?

@b0sse Looking at how TvRage has been handled the last months I would say it's a good idea to migrate over to another site. Even if TvRage comes back, it's not what it once was, lots of editors and moderators have left the ship, and I'd say that there still are high waters over there ... :)

Well, if TVRage is indeed fixing their shit and coming back, there is no reason for you to look into another solution and recode and mess around with API. Just keep it the way it is.

@lafinass @tiagoh @FrederikBolding @PYTo Well, @lemon his deadline at work is for the 4th of October (Tomorrow), so afterwards it's our #1 priority!

Please fix this as fast as you can, because as some people already said, we're all going to start losing track of our shows in a week or so, and have to start searching for some other options. That's something I wish I didn't have to do, because this is by far the best tv tracker...

Just keep us updated so we can all be relieved. TVRage's twitter mentions it will be back soon, but how soon? The site has been down for nearly a month already!

Is there any update on this? We're going to start losing track of our shows pretty quickly here...

Supposedly being fixed now, but their site has been down for 23 days. That's a bit absurd in this day and age.

Was wondering why one of my eps wasn't showing up. Hopefully it gets fixed soon.

TVRage just posted a message on their site. They are working on fixing the issue. Maybe they're not dead after all.

You guys are great! Thank you for the information!
I can manage! No need to rush development... I know how that goes, specially when you have a full job taking most of your time! No worries!

@all: My apologies for slacking at developing a solution for this :(

I work full time and develop followmy.tv as a side project. At my work we have a massive deadline next week and I've been pulling 14h work days for the last 2 weeks. I have little to no time to dedicate to FMTV until we finish the project.

Trust me, I feel worse about this than all of you guys. TVRage decided to die at the worst timing ever!

I expect to have much more free time somewhere early next week, I promise to make FMTV my priority after hours next week!

This is becoming so frustrating.. Does it really have to take this long?

Any updates on the matter? followmy.tv is getting unusable for me :(

Amberfool
Amberfool (Sep 27, 2015)

Glad to know you guys are looking at alternatives. Most of the shows I watch only have one more episode listed, so within a week, I won't be able to log anything here. Hope you guys figure something out soon.
