Eh. Pretty disappointing series, all things considered.

@Renegade412 @yoryan I've heard of Afro Samurai and Elfen Lied, but Gungrave sounds the most like what I'm looking for right now. I'll probably watch it after Code Geass, thanks a lot guys.

@Zelos Yeah watch Gungrave. For some reason I thought you already watched it. You mentioned you loved Trigun, well it's probably the closest you're going to get to it.

I'd recommend you watch the sub, though he's right in that the dub isn't that bad.

Gungrave: Bit of a bias pick, this one - one of the first more "adult" anime series I got into. Story has two distinct parts, and a very jarring opening (basically, the first of the episode takes place chronologically after episode 17). The story chronicles the rise of two friends, Brandon Heat and Harry MacDowell, through a mafia like organisation. Gradually becomes more and more supernatural/science fiction. I'm a little torn whether to say skip the first episode or not... I'd probably just out of habit say watch it first, but don't be put off. The first half of the series is definitely the best, with the second half being a little more action oriented. Great fights, excellent drama, and the English voice cast on this is pretty solid as well. I'm also a huge fan of the ending. Not sure if that's popular or not.

@Zelos Engrossing and unique, huh? I went through my watched list and picked out three shows.

Afro Samurai: Short and sweet. Only 5 episodes (plus a movie which, admittedly, I haven't seen), it's a nice tight narrative. About a black samurai, only referred to as Afro Samurai, seeking revenge on a man named Justice, who killed his father. It's set in a strange world, with swords, guns, kimonos, phones, cybernetics, bounty hunters, thugs, ninjas, and so forth. Afro also happens to be the #2 ranked fighter in the world (Justice is #1). It's really intriguing. Plus, look at that cast: Samuel L Jackson and Ron Perlman are the stars, but you've got solid voice actors Phil LaMarr, Terrence Carson, Yuri Lowenthal, and John DiMaggio all with roles (some minor). I hear Mark Hamill's in the film.

Another big selling point for the series is it's soundtrack, developed by RZA. Very hip hop, very cool, never invasive. The whole show just has this unique sort of presence, in a similar way to Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo had great identities filtered through their tunes. And, of course, the series is over-the-top violent, and from memory can be pretty brutal.

Elfen Lied: Another short one, just the 12 episodes, story pretty well told but can also has a bit of fanservice stuff in there. Also a very violent show - talking severed limbs and explosions of blood. Plot is about a mutated human, Lucy, who escapes from a lab but is shot and develops memory loss, reverting to an almost baby like persona - but all has sort of a split personality which is hyperviolent and aggressive. The story, essentially, is about Lucy's relationship with a young boy, Kouta.

Probably the darkest of my recommendations, it's a good balance between action and drama, won't take too long to get through, and can really draw you in. From memory, it's a bit horrifying too.

Baaaaaack. Okay. A few things about Claymore and why I don't find it that great, despite pretty solid action scenes. Firstly, let's go with the colour palette. Flat and lifeless. Boring. Last third of the show in a snow filled environment. It feels very monochromatic. It also doesn't help that the Claymore all look indistinguishable, with just a different hairstyle. Makes it hard to get attached to a character when everyone looks the same. @yoryan I'm sure the manga would probably be better at telling this story. I just found myself getting distracted watching it. Distracted by the lack of colour, or the poor musical themes, or the dialogue that was just bland and not helped by the poor voice acting (watched the English dub). But the manga isn't something I'm ever likely to get around to. I think I've just come to expect a little more from anime, mainly FMAB's fault as that was just fantastically produced.

Also doesn't help that the character I liked the most appeared the least in the series. And as such, I felt the show only had one high point - one point where I was invested in it. And then... well, it just didn't follow up. I'm talking about SHOW SPOILER Clare... well, I just struggled to care about her at all. And Raki was terrible.

@yoryan I've seen (and loved) Gurren Lagann. Code Geass is a great recommendation though, I've always heard good things but never actually seen an episode so I think I'll check it out.

@Zelos Code Geass

And if you want completely over the top action, Gurren Lagann. You'd probably love it.

Do you have any great anime suggestions? Samurai Champloo was fun and had good characters but I'm looking for something on the level of FMA, Death Note, or Higurashi in terms of pure engrossment. Or maybe something twisty like Steins;Gate. Or unique like Mirai Nikki. Actually I really want something unique. But just something good, I've got the itch.

The manga is supposed to be much better
