@az25 On the contrary: any great show should basically be building and developing its characters in every single scene, let alone a season. The character is the main driving force behind any story, the moment you allow your characters to remain static, is the moment your show dies. Any arc (which should be a season) has to take a character from the point where it starts in S01E01, to something completely new. And S02E0 needs to take that changed character, and take him somewhere else. You probably shouldn't plan those things too far ahead, but once you get to that second season it basically is your duty as a writer to find out what his next journey will be. Screenwriting is all about character, in every episode, in every scene, on every page.

There are other elements like plot which you shouldn't plan over more than one season, I'll most definitely agree with you on that, but character is the one thing that should never keep still. It's one of the best things Breaking Bad did: they did assume (or knew?) they would get more than one season, and they used that time to perfection.

@clowntable It's significantly better than Castle. You probably only watched 2 or 3 episodes and decided not to continue with Elementary, right? Then don't comment on it unless you have, because it's become significantly better than the simple procedural it was early on in season 1. Also, the thing with procedurals? Just because there are so many freaking procedurals on TV right now, doesn't mean they all suck or lack creativity. The good ones tend to get cancelled quickly, but shows like Person of Interest and Elementary are two of THE best procedural shows on TV right now, that don't even act like procedurals anymore, they've grown bigger than that label, like the best of them do. Southland is probably the best procedural show from the last decade, and I can't remember a cop show that brought me close to tears with so many episodes.

I still really love Sherlock. But this episode was questionable on many levels. We didn't need to spend the entire episode focussed on the marriage, they have an hour and a half to deal with, you can get it done with in the first half hour, then move on to Sherlock-ian things. Having the marriage throughout the entire episode exposes how incredibly shallow Cumberbatch's Sherlock is (the wedding speech was pretty great), which again, isn't a bad thing, but it works much better within the context of case(s) and the detective work. Just my opinions.

@Jos I agree, sort of, but what you just said is actually the definition of fanservice. If the writer's were interested in character building, that stuff always happens during a first season, as a writer, you can never assume you're getting a second or third season, regardless of how insanely popular your premise is. (see: The Following for how awful a show can become when they pretty much know a second season is coming)

@Jos Since there's only three episodes a series it's bad to have such an off balance with developing relationships and focusing on the actual crime plots of the show. The episodes feel like random scenes put together in a fanfic-y way with them getting drunk and all the strange ooc emotional scenes. Yeah it's enjoyable to watch but it's not the same standard. Just my opinion ofc
