The Mentalist

The Mentalist

The Mentalist follows Patrick Jane (Simon Baker), a consultant for the police who aids the California Bureau of Investigation in solving intriguing cases. Working with Patrick are leading agent Teresa Lisbon (Robin Tunney), agents Grace Van Pelt (Amanda Righetti), Wayne Rigsby (Owain Yeoman) and Kendall Cho (Tim Kang).

As the agents investigate a vast variety of crimes, Patrick adds to each investigation by incoporating elements of his experience as a mentalist. By watching human reactions and using hypnosis and autosuggestion, Patrick is able to set traps where the suspects and witnesses reveal the truth behind the case.

With his hazy past pretending to be a psychic, he had a complete deflection in his life when a serial killer decides to show where he would not get into, and it ends up bringing pain and regret to his life with his wife's and daughter’s death. Therefore, Patrick decides to use his knowledge and talents definitively to arrest all those that use California as playground.

@killmotion I completly agree with you, although I have the feeling that Lisbon's thinking has shifted since she went after Volker. It's like she understands Jane's obsession a bit more/better. I think Jane is only going to realise he needs/wants Lisbon if something were to happen which makes him fear he might lose her.

@killmotion Thanks, that is quite insightful.

@lois Not at all. It's definitely both there for them, I can see it, too. But I think for Lisbon she does feel that but isn't sure Jane feels the same way. And Jane feels something but he feels like he'd be betraying his wife if he acted on it. After all this time he still wears his wedding ring and is still so obsessed with Red John and killing him. And Lisbon wants to bring Red John to justice via the legal system, Jane just wants to vengefully kill him and he believes he as the right. Hell, he did talk his way out of a conviction for killing the man who claimed he WAS Red John. So that's a big dichotomy in thinking between the two which is also a huge factor in their continuing relationship.

Am I the only one who thinks that at times it looks like it could be more between Jane and Lisbon? Sometimes I wonder if she has feellings for him.

@Lange You're applying movie logic to a television series. Not saying it isn't an interesting idea, visited the possibility myself, but this show hasn't set the grounds one would need to flat-out lie to the audience like that, the method of the narrative does not allow for the abuse of an untrustworthy narrator - mostly, because there is no narrator, it's a television show being presented more or less as if it were unstaged. If they were to complete swap that now it would just be . . .bad. . .

I really love how The Mentalist even after 5 seasons is still top notch. This can't be said of a lot of shows.
