To while away the time, The Owl tells a story called 'The Two Are As One'. It is about two sisters who love the same man - one who returns both their loves. It is an intriguing story, even more so because it seems possible that 'Monsieur de Glancé' is none other than The Owl himself. It is impossible to tell whether he is telling a true story or inventing a fiction.
When day breaks, the story is not finished and as Restif has urgent business to attend to he takes his leave, promising to finish the story another time.
