I understand that some people liked the ending. It's right, it's not always rainbows and of course love is messy. My problem isn't how it ended, but how they treated the characters. First, a whole season at a wedding to, years later break up everything? That doesn't make any sense. Second, I'm okay with Tracy dying, again the plot twist isn't the problem. But the relation with the mother could be so well explored and it wasn't. Third, this was so rushed, every scene so rushed to the end when it could be separated in various episodes this season making the ending so much better. And finally, out of context, the scene with Barney and the baby was great, but all the character development we saw with Barney vanished the second they decided to go back to the old Barney. And again, we didn't understand if he's staying with the baby or not.

Rushed, and with loose ends, it's the end of a show that I followed since almost the beginning. Goodbye, HIMYM!

So we get a whole season about a wedding and then they mention occasionally during the last part of the finale that they got divorced? That's just plain stupid.

@TomF Exactly my thoughts. They could've done something else with this season instead of focusing on an already doomed marriage and having to rush everything in the finale, but okay, I guess we won't change that now..

I just checked again, just to be sure and the genre is defined as comedy! I don't think I've ever felt more down after watching drama...
Over the last couple of years I've seen a lot of shows being absolutely butchered in their last season(s), but this... I don't think there is an actual word to describe this.

@beckygalicha totally agree with you. it's just like, everybody ends doing whatever they always do

Messy handling of plot twists but an okay ending. I'm glad they went with the realistic route instead of sunshines and rainbows at the end.

May be the worst possible way to end a show..

I love this show and I will forever cherish it and even though there were some lovely moments in the series finale, I felt a little bummed. The way they handled Ted, Barney & Robin was lame... But I might be judgmental on this, since I'm totallt in love with the mother :D

@marud 22+ episodes a season, as a writer, you're trying to make everything perfect, but it's impossible. It's a valid criticism if it were an 8 or 10 episode per season show, but it's not. You're never going to be like Breaking Bad when you have 208 episodes, a neatly serialized story where every little detail is simply not possible or plausible.

Anyway, I'm glad people are angry about this. You were expecting gumdrops and rainbows at the end of this tunnel, and it serves you right that you didn't get it. This show was messy, love is messy, and this is the end it deserved. Love isn't perfect, your life can never be perfect.

I'm in the minority, and aside from SHOW SPOILER I thought this was a wonderful way to end this series. Not to mention, pretty ballsy, after spending the previous 22 episodes dicking around at Barney and Robin's wedding.

"Series creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas have said they’ve known how they wanted to end the show from the very beginning, and boy did they mean it— the final scene of the kids was filmed at the same time as those shots we’ve been seeing for nine years, but with Ted’s kids encouraging him to ask Aunt Robin out on a date." It's like this was all just a big experiment, I'm not sure how to feel about it.
