Nara was established as the capital more than 1000 years ago. It was the country's first major administrative center and was called Heijo-kyo. This year marks the 1300th anniversary of Heijo-kyo and the city is hosting many commemorative events, including the unveiling of re-created palace buildings. Our reporter Ayana Fuentes Uno visits the ancient capital, which became the foundation of a nation.
The full-scale excavation project began in 1954 in Heijo-kyo. About one third of the excavation was completed in the first 50 years and the work is ongoing.
Next they visit to eastern Nara, which has preserved its old structures and natural surroundings.Takabatake then went to Irie Taikichi Memorial Museum of Photography. Irie captured his deep love for Nara in vivid photographs. He focused landscape and Buddhist statues.
Lastly, they visit Yakushi-ji. The Emperor ordered the construction of Yakushi-ji to pray for the recovery of the ailing Empress. The Buddha of Medicine, Yakushi Nyorai, is venerated here. One building here retains its original grandeur from 1300 years ago. It's the East Tower. It's the only building that survived the myriad fires destroying the other structures.
