Set roughly ten years before the events of the original Star Trek, the series follows the crew of the USS Discovery as they discover new worlds and civilizations, while exploring the franchise's signature contemporary themes. The season-long story line revolves around an incident and an event in Star Trek history that's been talked about but never been explored.

Looking at Discovery purely as a sci-fi show, it was a good show despite some lazy (bad) writing here and there.
Looking at Discovery as a Star Trek show, it was disappointing.
The first 2 seasons were still okay, had some cool ideas but afterwards it started going down.
SHOW SPOILER Lorca, Pike and the mirror universe saved the earlier seasons
It just doesn't have that much in common with the decades of Star Trek shows we had before. They should've called it Star Wars: Michael Burnham. Because it looks more like Star Wars: revolving around a single character fighting 'a bad guy' with lots of explosions. There is no crew, there is only Michael Burnham doing everything by herself.
At least we got Strange New Worlds as a spin-off, which looks like an actual Star Trek show.
*end rant*
I'm still kinda happy we got a new Star Trek show though, just a shame it was a victim of how TV has changed these past 20 years, no more 20+ episodes a season, but only 10 where every episode has the same budget, pacing and story progression of a movie. And that doesn't always work out well...

Great cast, great production values, is definitely riffing on classic Trek themes and philosophies (people complaining that the captain is a bit more war monger-y than usual, like...do you not think that's gonna be addressed), absolutely fine with them bringing the franchise into a more modern format without losing the things that make it distinct. Even if the swearing is weird.
This is a great show, not sure what the other two are talking about. Can't wait til next episode.
pretty poor storyline so far...
