For sports I have a few that are over the top check this one's:
1. Major (Base Ball)
2. Prince of Tennis
3. Dear Boys (Basket Ball)
4. Hajime no Ippo (Boxing)
5. Ginga e Kickoff!! (Soccer)
6. Over Drive (Cycling)
7. Haikyuu!! (Volleyball)
8. Eyeshield 21 (Football)
I know a lot more that are fairly good but this are the best in their respective sports.
This are not actual sports but I know you will like them.
1. Shion no Ou (Shogi) It is a very intense anime.
2. Chihayafuru (Karuta)
3. Hikaru no Go
This two are music related but are very good.

I mainly use MAL Updater so I dot use the site to much but my profile name "Valsak85" as for the sort through popular/good stuff to watch the site is not that helpful. But it is a good place to go read about anime you may find shows to watch.
Good horror = Gore so if you are fine with that try:
1. Gantz
2. Elfen Lied
3. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (there is a bunch of this)
4. Kara no Kyoukai

@Valsak Yay a fellow anime fan! I'd love more suggestions..since I don't know too many shows. Do you have a profile on MAL? I have the same username there, http://myanimelist.net/profile/Crimson19 I mainly follow action/horror shows, but I want to get into other genres too. I just have no idea how to sort through what's popular/good to watch lol.
So you are a fan of anime to if you really like Another try Monster it is a good series. If by any chance you want to know more just let me know what you like. I use http://myanimelist.net/ to track anime you can find a lot of info there that helps.
