House of Cards

House of Cards

Created by Beau Willimon, “House of Cards,” takes a look into the sneaky politics and the underhand of U.S. electoral politics. The one-hour drama follows Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey, an ambitious politician with his eye on the top job).

In a modern day Washington D.C., the series managed to impress the audiences and gathered quite a following. The series was previously a BBC miniseries and based on a book by Michael Dobbs. Netflix streamed the series.

This show proves original programming on these modern methods of distribution work -- not just at the micro-budget level (youtube shows that can literally make over 100k USD a year, and much more for a few of them -- just an example) but at the full production level.

Imagine if Netflix or someone put their licensing budget towards original programming in the entirety? I don't see it happening soon, but Netflix itself will move more and more towards their own programmes if not going exclusive and that is really cool to think of. Particularly because we may find ourselves in a time where one stupid city (no offence to those of you in Cali) does not have a total freaking monopoly of film in general. Imagine someone in Tenessee writes a show that happens in Scotland and, as a web-based company, a producer like Netflix could find that creator a crew and team actually in Scotland without having to pay to move an entire American film crew over there. good for the Scottish economy, great for the creative variance of film as a medium.

impressive that is -- ran out of characters. Very annoying when you are nearly done.

As I was saying -- impressive and interesting show. Give it a watch.

By the by, as others have said - -this show has some fantastic acting, and the medium is very appropriate to the show itself. The way they edit has obviously been influenced greatly by the distribution method -- not just the lack of restraint on certain scenes or even just words -- but moreso the flexibility they exercised. Almost every television show, every episode is the same length, within 20 seconds or so. This show can have 5 minute differences (I think the largest I noted was 3 but I said can have, not has had) and it doesn't matter because it isn't slotted on a network and fighting for adverts.

Hell, just imagine that -- a channel that gets direct subscriptions, no adverts, not even for their own programmes (looking at you HBO) -- just a show, running the length the episode needs to run, done however the creators want to do it. To hell with censorship, advert timing, schedules, or anything else.

I wish this show was getting more attention. I watched the first episode last night, and the rest of the existing episodes the past day.

I love this show. I honestly believe this is the best show to have anything to do with politics let alone be centered around them to come along. Well, best scripted show at any rate -- The DAily Show with John Stewart is obviously and undeniably better, but that is beside the point. For one that is based on reality a lot closer (even if it is still a farce, something John has personally said often and openly, like on Crossfire most famously) and for another The Daily Show is a comedy act. Drama is harder, and as fantastic a job as House of Cards does, drama is harder to the point that the best drama still falls a bit short of the best comedy. Maybe not for import, I think House of Cards even might be more important than the Daily show if only looking at 16 random episodes -- and for staying importance, whereas the Daily Show is so important BECAUSE it is a daily show -- well, House of Cards has that beat hands down.

Anyway -- fantastic show, at least I think, it deserves more viewers and attention --- even media attention frankly, not just as a random plug but as something to be discussed in earnest. Our reactions to the main character, our reactions to the fictional congress, and our beliefs as to the accuracy of that fiction to real life -- as well as especially our reactions to what that reality is both in the show and the 'true' reality of the real American congress. It all is very interesting I think, and deserves as much study as thought obviously went into this show.

I kinda view this show as alternate history (a game we history buffs, majors, and graduates all play or have played) more than pure fiction to be honest. The amount of intelligence, study and effort that seems to have gone into it is very impressive, and the ability to create a massively interesting and entertaining drama out of that fiction -- impress

Netflix took a bold move and it paid off big time. This show is top notch in acting, writing, directing, the works. They're trying to compete with HBO for original content catering to subscribers and they've done it. I have a 'flix subscription because it's cheap and I can see THOUSANDS of different shows, movies and now original Netflix series. This show premiered at midnight on February 1st and all 13 episodes were available to watch. Marathoning it and enamored thus far. I don't have HBO because besides movies, they only have a few nights of series programs which I can always watch later. Can't wait to finish this and am looking forward to more shows presented in this format.
