Glad the show finished so strong. The early two seasons had the advantage of having a young queen figuring things out, and had more to mine from both geopolitical intrigue and the romantic travails of Phillip and Margaret. Plus, Claire Foy and Vanessa Kirby are stupendous actresses.
The show never figured out how to make the middle years as interesting—Margaret sidelined to basically one spotlight episode a season, Elizabeth less involved in global affairs and firmly in a maintenance mindset of no longer questioning anything about how to be a monarch, eventually Diana pulling all the focus and the show being quite narrowly focused on her and Charles for far too long. (Though there is stilll some great acting in those seasons, mostly from Josh O'Connor and Emma Corrin and Jonny Lee Miller as John Major.)
But the final season was more creative with dream sequences and flashbacks, and drew effectively from the natural drama of nearing the end of a life and wondering what it all meant. Not my favorite show ever, yet worth the ride.
"when the series was renewed for its 5th season it had been announced it would be The Crown's last. creator Peter Morgan decided to reverse the decision, and a sixth and final season of The Crown will be coming to Netflix in 2023."
