Torchwood is a prime example of wasted potential. The first two seasons are enjoyable, if a bit lackluster. They flounder into monster-of-the-week territory, with very little character development; only Gwen gets explored to any extent, with Jack forced to remain an enigma and Tosh, Owen, and Ianto getting stuck in their respective action-serial roles (Owen is served reasonably well with two arcs, but there's not a real follow-through on them).
Season 3 is stellar, and a must-watch for anyone, Doctor Who fan or no. Everything about it works, and the bite of it all is phenomenal.
Season 4 relies heavily on its mystery, which peters out somewhat and isn't terrifically supported. The Oswald Danes subplot is silly, and the actor doesn't really sell the menace that character is supposed to portray. The faceless nature of the antagonists also makes the story meander, which makes it hard to really engage with the thrill.
I bloody loved this until it went to America. Bloody Americans leave our television alone! You do your own stuff well, dont need to touch ours!
@b0sse New season called "The Conspiracy" is an audio production, not a new tv series.
New season called "The Conspiracy" was just announced
Skipped all the first two seasons.
The first few episodes looked really cheap, but once I got hooked, man I've watched the whole series at once. Although the last two seasons are not the 'usual' torchwood, I really liked it! They might have gone a bit too far with all the deaths throughout the series. Not a good thing to get attached. Still worth watching. After all, its only 50 episodes or so :p
@warna Same here.
@CamilloVip won't be any. Ended at 4.
@warna Opinions seem to be divided up until the third season. Season 3 was super critically acclaimed.
First season is probably the worst thing I've ever watched, sticking up with it just because it's Doctor Who-related.
What about the five season?
I loved this show, every single episode.
gods. the 4th season is such a shit. it's not Torchwood.
Just finished season 3, truly mindblowing.
Season 3 > season 1 > season 2.
Not as good as Doctor Who, but definitely worth watching!
Very hit and miss.
Season 1: great
Season 2: average
Season 3: AMAZING
Season 4: awful so far
@Divineone
I would give it time. They went to the full on story, serialized format for season 3, but only did a few episodes. Having to stretch it out and make it somewhat American has probably meant that most of the interesting stuff will happen later on. I would keep watching.
@b0sse
You can update anything on here at TVRage and eventually the changes will show up here.
Here is some talk about how it might not get renewed, at least not for a while. It sounds like they are treating it almost like a mini-series, where if a new idea for some episodes comes up, then they will do it again. Season 3 was a mini-series, more or less, so I see where they are going. They want an idea before they commit.

The new season is far from the quality of the other seasons.
It's just too American now.
Can you please change the airdates to the american ones? Since it airs on american TV before UK tv.
