Written by Nic Pizzolatto (The Killing), the first season of True Detective will center on a pair of detectives, Martin Hart (Woody Harrelson) and Rust Cohle (Matthew McConaughey), who end up crossing paths on a 17- year hunt for a serial killer deep within Louisiana. The series will feature a split narrative jumping between when the case first opens back in 1995, and the present when the two detectives are testifying in court after the case is reopened.

I'm going to be the only contrarian here, apparently. First, I love the pacing. Yeah, the show is lovely to look at. The directing is great, the tracking shot was cool. It also isn't the only tracking shot we've ever seen on TV. I get it, it was cool as shit, but if that's the reason why you think this show is awesome, umm, I don't know what to say.
This show is bordering on pure brilliance to hot garbage for me. The writing can be absurd sometimes, like are you kidding me with SHOW SPOILER Martin and his mistress (and everything spinning off from that)? That was pure garbage. The acting is good, but the writing is seemingly an act of self-fellatio in it's highest form. Where the hell is this going? I'm glad we've apparently moved on from SHOW SPOILER the serial killer plotline, but still, this show is not the greatest thing on TV just because it's not NCIS or CSI. Is this how low our police procedural standards have become? Just because it's slow-paced, does not make it instantly better than any CBS/ABC/NBC procedural. Virtually every episode of Southland is SO much better than this.
McConaughey is a beautiful man, and his chemistry with Woody is wonderful, of course, them being best friends. But, please, please, when you judge this show, take that, and the filmmaking out of the equation and actually think about Pizzolatto's writing. What the hell is this? You need writing to bring the acting and the filmmaking together, and this... this is not that great.
Also, where the fuck are the women, and non-white people, aside from being ridiculous stereotypes??
It's a wonderful idea, Woody and Matthew signed on for one season, then next season (if there is one) will be an entirely different story in an entirely different location. It doesn't change the one big problem. Nicholas Pizzolatto and his sole, single-minded vision of what this show should be on paper.
holy hell the last episode was fantastic. on the whole, this show is REALLY good. excellent character development, some great writing, some SWEET acting from everyone, all round great.
@BlackDynamite
Never saw Killer Joe & The Lincoln Lawyer, didn't seem like my cup of tea. I'll watch 'Mud' one of these days because I've heard some great stuff and the trailer looked great. Dallas Buyers Club & The Wolf of Wall Street are good, but also recent ; )
@Woutr900 He already had some good parts: Mud, Killer Joe, The Lincoln Lawyer & Dallas Buyers Club! Oh and a epic short appearance in The Wolf of Wall Street!
This show has been spot on from the very beginning. The slow pacing of the show is the only way it would work, it results in far more character development. I can't believe I actually like Matthew McConaughey's performance in this. Nearly unrecognisable from the surfer douche he's always been
I find it absolutely flawless. So atmospheric! Those opening credits alone, jizz.
@Moldonado I know right, who are these people saying this story moves slow? I feel like I need to focus for 60 minutes to really get what's going on..
I like the actors but the story moves too slowly. I gave it a try.
Not a fan yet, but it's a good start with the first 2 episodes.
Bah..unfollowed.
i liked the 2nd episode far more than the first.
Haha
WTF?! It's really Matthew McConaughey?! O_O
..Btw, the first episode.. for me, a mess.. Too many things, not good explained.. Mhmmm.. I don't know yet..
Already loving this. What a fantastic first episode!
