The TVRage situation
As you may know: We've been using the TVRage API to get all our data (the airdates, episodes,.. ). Their website has been offline for a week by now, so we're preparing for the worst. At this moment Jelle is developing an alternative. We just wanted to let you know that there is no loss of data (and there won't be). All the existing data are safe in our database.
Please let us know if you have any questions about this.
PS. We'll be replying on the mails we received about becoming a moderator / developer this week. Send us an email at info@followmy.tv if you haven't done so already!
-- Update Saturday 10 October --
I (Jelle) am swamped with work at the moment. Will be for another week probably. I secretly hoped tvrage would have come back online but it seems like it's dead for good.
This means that I have to completely rewrite the importer and figure out how to map existing data to new external data.
This takes a long time because that part of the application was designed for speed and is very complex. It would take me several days to change, optimize and test with live data.
Currently I just have no time at all to do this. I'm working 15h + daily at my regular job to finish a big project before its deadline.
I might be able to start work on this update tomorrow for a couple of hours. But it being finished, tested and deployed will take at least a week or two.
Comments
Yesterday, TVRage posted on their twitter the following: "More news is imminent"
TVMaze's API seems like a great alternative
Thanks for the hard work, Jelle! I'll wait as long as it takes for Followmy.tv to be up to date again, so please do not strain yourself by trying to hurry the project with everything else going on in your life.
Perhaps switching over to a system where a small cadre of users have a wiki-editing style access to the system/user contributed update requests would be a better solution. Getting basic functionality restored will be nice, but this would prevent this kind of thing from happening again, while also fixing the issue that duplicated/incorrect entries would require getting people at another website entirely to fix the problem.
I really like followmytv and I wouldn't trade for any other website so just know that i will patiently wait for the return of its regular working and I hope you manage to do all those errands you have going on and please dont jeopardaize your work and project due to pleasing some people by working faster on this website because at the end of the day this site will always be better and the people who leave will end up coming back. Good luck and if by any way we can help just let us know!
@jaehyo thx for this new app is great I'm watching really a lot of shows and don't have time than one person gonna fixing this for months.
Good Luck Jelle, we are behind you. If you need testers, I am sure some of us will volunteer.
I really appreciate all the work that you guys do to keep this place ticking over, especially since I know you have a small team, so I'm willing -- as I'm sure many of us are -- to be patient until you have the time to address the situation properly. None of the alternatives I'm using to keep track of the missing episodes are half as good as this place.
That said, it seems like TVmaze are being really generous with their offers of help so I hope you will take them up on it so this can be addressed sooner rather than later.
Good luck!
Absolutely love the minimalist concept of this site. Just open dashboard and I can see a list of my followed shows and a number of aired and unwatched episodes. Thats all I need. Thats all we using sites like this for. I dont want my screen filled with recommendations, schedule of shows I dont even watch, and meaningless cover pictures. If Im looking for a new show to pick up, then I will look up some options. No need to put it under my nose... Im staying because FMTV is the best way of tracking my shows. Im staying until its officially dead.
finally, thanks for the update!
shame that it'll take another week or two but this site is worth it, so good luck with all this :)
see you soon all shiny and fixed ;)
you guys should seriously take the help from TVmaze... but for now I've moved to tvshowtime, their app is really nice too. good luck~
Team with TVmaze, seems like they've done most of the work already if I'm reading @Janp 's comment correctly.
I'm staying and I'll wait too because I really like this site. Good luck with fixing the problem and thank you to take time on your busy schedule to do so :) Again, good luck !
I'm staying because I don't watch a lot of tv anymore, but still .. rip :(
Take the help @janp is offering.
I love this site and I'll wait whatever it takes. I hope it takes you less time than you expect, and thank you so much for that.
Hey Jelle,
Jan from TVmaze here. We've offered to help a month ago and attempted to communicate several times with you guys but there has been virtually no communication. If you have the tvrage show id's you can use those to lookup the information for the desired shows on TVmaze. www.tvmaze.com/api
Good luck with your deadline btw. We know all too well how it goes.
Another two weeks is too long for me, I'm really losing track now.. Guess I'm switching..
sidereel.com is a great alternative.
I am not giving up on you, but for the time being I am going to switch to tvshowtime.com
@iturki I started using trakt.tv
